Relocating to another country comes with its own set of challenges. It’s not as easy as moving to another suburb, as you have to consider the region’s own regulations and the distance you have to travel. It gets even more complicated when you have pets, thanks to the massive amount of paper work you have to go through.
This, however, doesn’t mean you should leave your best friend behind. With a little planning and execution, you can enjoy your new country with your pet and here’s how.
- Do your research about the regulations
While your bullterrier, Fido, is welcome in your country, she may be illegal in others. Their travel eligibility depends on many variables such as your country of origin and your pet’s species. For example, the flabby Neapolitan Mastiff is banned in Singapore, while Romania requires that an owner be psychologically fit to own one. Before making any key decisions, speak to the country’s consulate or look up the official requirements to determine whether you’ll be able to travel with your pet.
- Assess whether the new environment is ideal
Just like other animals, pets are also built for certain environments. Some are able to adapt to new settings, while others are at risk of contracting illnesses and even depression. In this regard, you may want to speak to your vet to find out if your pet will cope with different conditions, like climate, or illnesses even after vaccination. And even if your cat is built to brave the cold, you might want to also consider the country’s culture, i.e. their general acceptance of certain animals.
- Make an appointment with the vet
Once you have established the country’s guidelines on foreign pets, you will need to go visit a veterinary surgeon. If your local vet is not experienced with preparing animals for overseas travel, look for one who is. This is because one minor misstep in detail may just result in you having to go through a time consuming and costly process. This is also your chance to discuss any potential problems your companion might face while in their new home country.
- Arrange for a pet carrier
In the event that you plan on flying your pet down to the new country, airlines need you to have a pet carrier. They specifically want one that is certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). While making arrangements with the air company, ask for the exact dimensions needed for your pet’s species. You also might be as lucky to find out that they have one that they can lease to you.
Moving with your pet might not be easy, but once you get over the hurdles you can look forward to enjoying your new home with your best friend.
