We all know our animals cannot say what they feeling or thinking so we need to plan our move to be as comfortable as can be for ourselves and our little fur babies. They don’t know what’s happening so refrain from putting any fear into those little bodies. Try to maintain your calm, your pet can sense when you panic.
During a move, there is always lots of people and furniture moving in and out of the house which might scare your little beloved and might even hurt him in the process. Having a family member or friend take them for a walk to the park is a great idea but sometimes impossible.
Man and Vans are here to help make your move easier by offering some great and useful tips about moving house with your dog(s).
Leaving Your Old Home
When leaving your old home, you will need a game plan, there’s a lot going on but it’s important not to neglect your dog’s needs. Prepare and easily accessible overnight kit with enough dog food and toys to keep your pet comfortable during your days of packing. The more stressed they are, the more stressed you will be.
The Car Ride
Try to take your pet to your new house in your own car, they will feel much more comfortable than what they would in a stranger’s vehicle. If traveling long distances be sure to stop every four to six hours to get out and have your dog stretch his legs and take a bathroom break. Older dogs might not always be up for a long trip and might be at risk of suffering health issues so talk to your veterinarian about what travel method is the safest for your pet.
Settling In
Establish a new routine as quickly as you can as it is likely that some things will change in your new home. Always try and stay as close as possible to your previous routine at the old house.
Updating your dog tags is extremely important as your dog will be unfamiliar with its surroundings. Now that you are in a new place its easier for your pet to get lost. Also, don’t forget to make sure your new home has a fence-in area where they could roam without getting lost.
Don’t wash your dog’s blankets when moving into your new home, the familiar scent on his blankets will help him feel more at home.
